UofL Health – Medical Center South is transitioning to a new, comprehensive inpatient hospital

UofL Health is investing in the health of Bullitt County, and the surrounding area, with an expansion of UofL Health - Medical Center South to become an inpatient hospital – UofL Health – South Hospital. UofL Health – South Hospital will add approximately 100,000 square feet of new space to the existing facility. The hospital is expected to open in Spring 2023, and will bring over 100 new jobs to the community.

Approximately 30,000 square feet of new construction on the first floor of the hospital will include:

Two additional operating rooms for a total of six
New cardiac catheterization lab
Expansion of emergency department to increase capacity and efficiency
New centralized sterile processing area
Two-story entrance and lobby
Dining room
Support space

The second and third floors of the facility will comprise approximately 70,000 square feet and will include:

10-bed intensive care unit
30 medical/surgical patient rooms
20 future patient rooms
New laboratory and pharmacy
Cardiopulmonary, respiratory therapy and support space

The transformation from medical center to full-service hospital will bring:

More primary care and specialty care providers
Enhanced emergency capabilities
Increased surgical and outpatient services
Intensive care unit
More job opportunities

Evolving Medical Center South into a hospital is part of UofL Health’s commitment to Medically Underserved Areas such as Bullitt County. The term, “Medically Underserved Area” is a federal designation, noting shortage of primary care providers, high infant mortality, high poverty or a high elderly population. Whether urban, rural, or suburban, better access leads to better health. Bullitt County is a growing community and UofL Health is growing to meet the need.

In 2020, nearly 25,000 patients sought care at Medical Center South’s emergency room but, because the facility lacks inpatient beds, more than 2,000 wound up being transferred to hospital in surrounding counties. The new hospital fills a need in Kentucky’s 10th largest county. With nearly 82,000 people, Bullitt County is the largest county in the Commonwealth without inpatient beds.

Adding inpatient beds at Medical Center South is among recent efforts by UofL Health to increase access to services. Over the last year, the system also opened five new Urgent Care Plus locations, including one in Cedar Grove (1707 Cedar Grove Rd) in Shepherdsville. Monday through Saturday, all Urgent Care Plus locations are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday’s hours are 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. No appointment is necessary for urgent care.
